2009 Gathering of Weavers Continued
Phoenix, AZ Moving down the Heard Museum’s courtyard at the Gathering of Weavers last Saturday, I smelled Navajo tea and then saw D.Y. Begay with her dyepots. Also called kota or greenthread, the Navajo tea plant is used to make a beverage as well as a dye for wool. Depending on the type of pot…

The Oak Ridge Fire status as of this morning:
Oak Ridge Fire Update – July 5, 2025
Size: 10,814 acres
Personnel: 604
Containment: 26%
Containment doubles as fire crews continue to work the edges of the Oak Ridge Fire.
Highlights: Friday’s firefighting efforts brought containment of the Oak Ridge Fire to 26%. There is still much work to be done on the rugged edges of the fire, but steady progress continues to be made. Significant smoke could be visible today as unburned pockets of vegetation within the fire’s perimeter are consumed. The risk of spread from this interior burning is minimal.

Here are some pictures from the shearing event at the Navajo Nation fairgrounds this morning! Jay Begay organized a shearing for the sheep evacuated due to the Oak Ridge Fire (now 13% contained).
Some of evacuated sheep hadn't been sheared this year. They got a good haircut from the volunteer crew. Most of the shearing was done with hand shears, although there was one electric clipper on site.
You can spot Jay Begay, Nikyle Begay, and Eliseo Curley among those wielding the shears. They completed the job well before noon.
We dropped off some wool bags and left water, Gatorade, and some snacks with the donation center on the fairgrounds.

Stay in touch with us!
Here is our schedule as of right now!
April 28, 2024 If the class you'd like to take is full, we'd be glad to have you join the waiting list! If an opening occurs, we'll contact everyone on the list for that event, and the first person who says "yes" will get the seat. Sign up for as many lists as you'd like. It's free, and we really appreciate our students who can join us with less notice. It helps us to be flexible and responsive.
