Rug of the Day: Spring Pictorial by Sarah Tso

Spring Pictorial by Sarah Tso

A delightful view of Spring in Navajo country by weaver Sarah Tso

Tempe, AZ If you’re around  Diné Bikeyah, the Navajo homeland,  in the Spring of the year, you’re sure to see young animals and scenes aren’t too different from the one captured in this woven tribute to the Navajo lifeway by weaver Sarah Tso.  Sarah has been weaving for the collectors market since about 1980 and she is noted for the deft accuracy of her woven figures.  One of her pieces is in the lobby of the Quality Inn in Window Rock and the weaving above by Sarah was photographed at an auction in Prescott, Arizona a couple of years ago.   Sarah even constructed a special yarn using two strands of beige and one strand of green to depict the tentative greenery that dots our dry area after the spring snow and rains have passed.   I love the figures of the two horses dancing in the center of this weaving.  Look at the way Sarah’s shown their expressions, their tails, their joy in being alive.  Don’t you want to dance like that?  Me too.

Hagoshíí (so long for now)

I agree! The human figures are great too. It’s a rug with a lot to love.

I especially love the horse to the left of the dancing pair. It looks more alive than horses in some paintings and that’s impressive.
