Wool for the weft will need to be purchased in the shop at the time of the workshop. Barbara and Lynda have taught Navajo Weaving for over 14 years. Weave a beautiful, wearable accessory to your wardrobe in the Navajo Cinch technique. Learn Basic Tapestry skills in a narrow format. NOTE: If you prefer to weave a saddle cinch as pictured, please call me in advance. Cinch instruction is $60 extra. Navajo or other sturdy frame loom required for either project. Using crockpots as yarn cookers, get luscious colors without any fuss. A simple color-theory review will send us back to the dye pots in successive days to overdye our primary-colored skeins of yarn to yield every color of the rainbow. Mordents will be covered. Participants will start and finish a small Navajo rug on an upright Navajo loom. Participants will spin and ply their own edge cords before warping. Participants will learn the basic weaving using the vertical and diagonal design. They will finish a one of a kind rug. There will be room for story telling. The Navajo Horse Cinch Weaving workshop with master weaver/fiber artist and 4th generation weaver/sheep herder Roy Kady will consist of learning the very basics of Navajo Horse Cinch weaving techniques warped between two D rings. Each student will warp their own strings between two (2) D rings, dress them appropriately and weave a plain simple pattern of stripes, square/step and diagonal patterns, they will also learn about the finishing techniques and are recommended to complete their weavings by the end of the workshop session. Beginners: Students will learn the traditional method of Navajo weaving and will begin by learning how to prepare an upright Navajo-style loom for weaving. The majority of the week will be spent designing and learning how to weave a 16″ x 24″ rug. In order to complete the rug and learn how to finish the piece, it is recommended that students continue for the second week. Then the students are guided through the design stage. For beginning students this will be a block design, while advanced students will work with diagonals, or even a twill. The Navajo way is not to use a cartoon but rather to design right on the loom. Participants will construct a loom using canvas stretcher bars that can be taken home. Jennie and Mary will guide you through the processes of warping the loom, weaving, and design.
